We are seeking a Director of Product Engineering to work across the Privateer portfolio of Companies to support projects related to the design and development of cannabis/hemp extraction systems for formulation of a diverse range of medical and recreational cannabis-infused product applications. The Product Development Manager will work closely with the Tilray Chief Science Officer and Privateer project engineers on development and implementation of Privateer and Tilray product development strategy. This will include responsibility for detailed design, process development, construction, commissioning, and scale-up of new cGMP-certified botanical extract production sites to be deployed and operated in various jurisdictions. The candidate will also be expected to implement testing protocols to evaluate the potency and safety of cannabis samples in accordance with regulatory standards and standard operating procedures. This position will require a significant amount of travel to the company’s core business locations. 
 
Duties and responsibilities
  • Develop, optimize, and implement botanical extraction methods from hemp and cannabis raw materials, using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and/or other known or new extraction technologies
  • Work with Tilray Chief Science Officer and Privateer project engineering personnel on overall GMP-grade extraction facility design in various Privateer Holdings endeavors
  • Assist with processing equipment characterization at different scales for development of scale-up models.
  • Develop cannabis-infused formulations for retail products in line with the goals of Privateer Holdings and its portfolio companies.
  • Source, install, commission equipment for extraction of cannabis constituents in both pilot scale and full scale production operations.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of process development experiments at laboratory and/or pilot plant scale
  • Draft standard operating procedures and other compliance-critical documentation such as validation protocols, traceability records, batch records
  • Where possible, identify opportunities for intellectual property development
Our ideal candidate should have:
  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical/process engineering, or related discipline
  • 3-5 years’ experience with extraction, refinement, separation of organic compounds – botanical extraction experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and scale up processes from pilot plant scale to full scale manufacturing
  • Demonstrated understanding of process validation principles
  • Comfortable operating process equipment and ability to quickly learn new equipment
  • 1-2 years direct experience in a product development or business development role
  • Experience with product formulation, particularly in the botanical, cosmetic, and/or pharmaceutical space would be an asset
  • Direct working experience with Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Must possess written and verbal communications expertise, demonstrated leadership, initiative and exceptional interpersonal skills.
